Exploring the Artistic Resources of Kanchipuram 2018 from ICAT, Chennai
L4 VFX students of ICAT, Chennai went on a trip to Kanchipuram, as part of their VCMEP module. As a house of centuries old religious heritage, the place shines with natural beauty. The students visited the place with craving minds to sketch the natural scenery and record the artistic beauty of the capital of Pallava Dynasty, Kanchipuram.
On the way to Kanchipuram, the nature treated our aspiring minds with awestruck scenery. The team jumped to record the beauty in front of them. The Art faculty, Mr. Praveen Jacob gave a live demonstration of Visual Sketching of the scenery in a Pastel medium and motivated students to do their own .
At the centuries old Kamakshi Amman Temple, bearing the art and architectural skills of our ancestors, our students enthusiastically started sketching the Temple Tower with lot of intricate artwork in the south gate of the temple and sculptures. Some of the students even directly drew the Temple Tower Sketch with pen, as experience Artists do.
Then the team visited the Silk Weaving area and took lot of Photographs about the trade. The weavers demonstrated how to incorporate Gold Thread (Jari) in Silk Sarees through Hand Weaving.
Student's Feedback:
“Kanchipuram trip was for live drawing and we understood some ethics about using soft pastels. We visited a home where silk is made and collected information about the complete cycle of producing silk. The overall trip was very enjoyable and very useful.”Mr. Aravindhan
“Kanchipuram trip was very useful for improving our art skills and to explore the nature. At Kachipuram, we did some nice art works in the farm field which was really good. The visit to the temple in Kanchipuram was very exciting and we drew the temple in our own style. It was very useful in developing our communication skills and also to interact with others.”Mr. Johnson
“We went to Kamakshiamman temple in Kanchipuram and we got an opportunity to sketch some areas of the temple. We also met few Silk weavers there and they explained us about the process of making a saree. They gave us a brief about the machines and tools they use during the process. We also had an outdoor session to sketch the nature. All these helped us in understanding many nuances of art.”Mr. Mobin
