The Bachelor's Degree in Visual Effects at ICAT is a full-time program that provides high level of technical mastery in all key techniques, from initial lighting intentions to final calibration. Beyond pure mastery of software, the program develops creativity, artistic acuity, and visual culture in students.

The program gives the students intense practice on professional production processes. They are also given an all-round knowledge on 3D Art, 3D Animation, Concept Art, and Game Design, which allows them to develop short films and game cinematics. The detailed study of VFX techniques and the additional knowledge on related streams enable the students to take up job roles as a Digital Compositor, Set & Environment Artist, 3D Artist, Cinematographer, Matchmoving Artist and more.

Curriculum

The Learning Curve

Semester - I
  • Language Practical (Tamil / Hindi / French) - I
  • Language Practical - English-I –Prose and Communication Skills
  • Laying the foundation for VFX production, this module introduces students to communicate through visuals. It discusses design methodology (visual form), and extends students’ awareness and technical understanding of design and its relevance to art.

  • Practical understanding on the underlying principles and elements of design is given to the students here. The students get to implement their understanding of colour psychology and creatively use various design elements.

Semester - II
  • Language Practical (Tamil / Hindi / French) - II
  • Language Practical - English-II – Prose, Extensive Reading and Communications Skills
  • The art of creating graphics that use video and/or animation technology to create the illusion of motion is introduced to the students. The module enables students to incorporate audio in a multimedia project.

  • This module gives the students a comprehensive understanding of matte painting by using digital painting and photo manipulation techniques, and an understanding of design aesthetics for a successful career in pre-production.

  • Environmental Studies
Semester - III
  • Language Practical – English - III - Communicative Skills
  • Training students in creating animatics is the aim of this module. It enables students to come up with a story, write a screenplay, create a storyboard and then create animatics.

  • Exploring through the skills gained in the “Motion Graphics” module, the students here move on to creating 2d /3d title sequence animations.

  • This module helps students to learn the production phase of film-making. It trains students in lighting, cinematography, audiography and film direction.

Semester - IV
  • Language Practical - English – IV – Employability Skills
  • This module helps students to explore VFX compositing, which is an important and final step in the VFX production pipeline. It teaches students to integrate different live action footages, and integrate digital assets with a live action footage.

  • Honing the skills of modelling and texturing, the students here move on to explore the digital world. They get to perform 3d modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering by using industry-standard software.

  • Value Education
Semester - V
  • Brief knowledge about effective business communication and techniques, strategies, innovations, project budgeting, timely implementation of beneficial project plans and policies improving business partnerships are focused in this module.

  • The students here develop their design and presentation skills by producing a range of work. They also develop their ability to critique their own work and that of their peers in a professional manner.

  • This module helps students to learn and perform the entire pre-production process of VFX film making.

Semester - VI
  • In this module, students work on a live project in a Design Studio / a similar organization, where they seek hands-on experience in research and product development.

  • The students here are expected to take up an independent study and work on the production of a Visual Effects Short Film
